The IASAP Legislative Committee suggests the following tips for working
with elected officials. Although the list is not comprehensive,
it is a place to begin to strengthen communication. These
are the people who make decisions about our budgets, policies, communities,
etc. so we really encourage you to build a relationship with them.
Please contact committee chair, Liz Nelson: enelson@co.lake.il.us or
847-543-2854 if you would like more information.
- Invite elected officials
to special events, i.e. open houses, school assemblies,
community networking meetings, etc.
- Send quarterly updates to all elected officials. Include any statistics,
anonymous personal quotations or stories from students or families
who have benefited from
SAP, articles related to SAP or IASAP, etc.
- Schedule meetings with elected officials or a staff member. Use JoinTogether
and Boston University's 10 Alcohol and Drug Policies that Will Save Lives document
to begin the conversation.
